Guidelines When Photographing Lips

This series of photographs is important for lip/smile analysis and tooth display. Lips should be the primary focus, nose and chin do not need to be included. When photographing for shade reference, have patient remove lipstick. Helpful Settings: f/22, ISO between 100-400, Shutter speed @ 1/60-1/250.  Shoot in Raw format and use auto focus.

Suggested Series of Photographs / Lips

1. Lips / Frontal View

Patient Not Smiling, Mouth Closed, Lips Together.
Align vertical midline in center of frame.
Focus on upper lip.

2. Lips / Frontal View

Patient Not Smiling, Mouth Slightly Open, Teeth Slightly Apart
Align vertical midline in center of frame.
Focus on Upper Central Incisors.

3. Lips / Frontal View

Full Smile, Teeth Occluded, Say Cheese!
Align vertical midline in center of frame.
Focus on upper central incisors.



1. Lips / Profile @ 90*

Patient Not Smiling, Mouth Closed, Lips Together.
Align vertical midline in center of frame.
Focus on upper lip.
Photograph both right and left sides.



2. Lips / Profile @ 90*

Patient Not Smiling, Mouth Slightly Open, Teeth Slightly Apart
Focus on left maxillary central for left profile. 
Focus on right maxillary central for right profile.
Photograph both right and left sides.



3. Lips / Frontal @ 90*

Full Smile, Teeth Occluded,
Focus on maxillary left central for left profile.
Focus on maxillary right central for right profile.
Photograph both right and left sides.
